History
of Corbett National Park at a glance:
Till 1820 : Private property
of local rulers being taken over by the British rules.
1820 : Forests mercilessly felled for timber by British
rulers.
1858 : Plan drawn up for the protection of forests.
1879 : Declared as reserved forest
1884 : Jim Corbett shoots his first leopard
at the age of eight.
1900-1910 : Jim Corbett leads, Shikar parties
and kills two man-easters.
1910 : Jim Corbett gives up killing as mere sport and
becomes the saviour of the villagers, defending them from man-eaters.
1934 : The Park is declared a National Park.
1935-36 : It was named the Hailey National Park.
1954 : It was renamed as The Ramganga National Park.
19 April 1955 : Jim Corbett died in Nyeri.
1957 : After death of Jim Corbett,
the park is renamed as Jim Corbett National Park in
honor of his memory.
1st April 1973 : The Park becomes the first Tiger Reserve
of India under Project Tiger.
India truly is a land of extremes in its climate, vegetation and geography richness in flora (plants) and fauna (animals). India today has around 81 National Parks and more than 435 sanctuaries. In Northern India Corbett National Park (CNP) is a magnificent nature part which has the Ramganga canal alone the upper Gangas River as its core and Himalayan mountain for background. CNP is the oldest National park of Indian Subcontinent. Corbett Tiger Reserve (CTR) spread over an area of 1318.54 sq. km, is situated in foot-hills of Himalayan mainly in district of Nainital and Garhwal. It is one of the eighteen tiger reserves in India. CTR contains two protected areas within its precincts, namely Corbett National Park (520.8 sq. km) and Sonanadi Wildlife Sanctuary (301.18 sq. km). CTR lies in the Shiwalik-terai biotic province abutting the Himalayas. That has resulted in great habitat diversity. The CTR has tall mountains of outer Himalayas towards its north while the drier Shiwalik range lies on the south. River Ramganga is the lifeline of Corbett has crystal clear water. Mandal, Plain and Sonanadi are its main tributaries.

cheetal herds in hundred grazing in sprawling chaur nearby;
always alert for ever lurking danger from prowling carnivore,
