Elephants in Corbett:
In the summer, elephants can be seen in herds of several hundred.in Corbett National Park. Corbett Tiger Reserve has about 600+ Asian elephants. They are part of the migratory population that also lives in Rajaji National Park. Corbett Tiger Reserve, along with the Rajaji National Park also represents the North-western most limits of Tiger and Elephant Distribution in the Indian subcontinent. Earlier, there were much fewer elephants in Corbett but their population in the park has increased significantly in recent decades. The elephant, largest of the land mammals, has been an inherent part of the history, mythology, tradition, culture and religion of India. There are three living species of elephants in the whole world, Two in Africa and one in India. Elephants are famed for their noteworthy intelligence and a sharp retention. This is because elephants have the largest brains among all the animals. Males have tusks and such elephants are usually called “tuskers”. There are also some males without tusks, called “makhnas”. In corbett national park elephants are most easily sighted in Dhikala chaur, Phulai chaur, Saddle Dam.& Malani Chaur Area.
Elephants are main attraction of Corbett. Nearly 600 Asian elephants have a home in this Corbett Tigers Reserve, and can be seen wandering leisurely along its length and breadth. Elephants are exclusive to this park. At Corbett one can see elephant drinking and playing with water at Ramganga. Wild Elephant in the Corbett used to be seasonal visitors rather than residents, but with the construction of dam and submersion of their established trek routes a population seems to have turned resident. These elephants wander all over the tree forest and frequenting comes on to the open clear river and bathe . Two things should always be kept in mind with regard to wild elephants here, the difficulty of judging their size in the vast, open settings of the Corbett Reserve, and the need to take care not to disturb or provoke them. People in a van are completely safe when encountering wild elephants unexpectedly, but when on foot it is essential to avoid being to close to them -men on the ground have been attacked here.
Life style of Elephant just have a look :
Elephants moves forest to forest in herds (a group of several families). Elephant tusks are very heavy and can weight up to 25 kg a pair. The male or bull joins the herd, for mating period of 6-15 days. As due to their size and daily requirement on Elephant need more than 200 kg. of green fodder and 300 lt. of water included 60-70 lt. at a time. Elephant have poor eyesight but contrary to it sense of hearing and smell are highly developed.
